Sustainability

Proper candles. Thoughtful choices.

Sustainability is a core value at Dead On Candle Co. We want to make candles you love, while making thoughtful choices about the packaging that brings them to your door and what happens to it afterwards.

Our aim is to use more sustainable products wherever practical, alongside the quality, fragrance and care you expect from a Dead On candle. For us, that means choosing materials carefully, avoiding unnecessary packaging and looking for ways to improve as we grow.

Cardboard with another life in it

We use cardboard shipping boxes from Kite Packaging that contain recycled material and can be recycled again after use. They protect your candle on its journey and are handy for storing bits and pieces or sending a parcel of your own.

When you have finished with the box, flatten it, keep it clean and dry, and follow your local cardboard recycling guidance, including any instructions about removing tape and labels.

A little cushioning, carefully chosen

The loose fill around your candle is Kite's EcoFlo, made from maize-based starch. It cushions the glass and helps keep your candle secure in the box. Kite describes EcoFlo as biodegradable and compostable, with conformity to the EN 13432 compostability standard.

Keep it dry and reuse it for another parcel where you can. When you have finished with it, you can add it to your home compost or put it in your food waste bin where your local collection accepts compostable packaging. It also dissolves in warm water. Please keep it out of your paper and plastic recycling.

Sealed with paper tape

We seal our parcels with kraft paper tape printed with a clear FRAGILE message. Choosing paper tape helps us reduce our use of plastic packing tape, while reminding handlers that there is something breakable inside.

Give your jar a second life

The candle may be finished, but the amber glass jar can still earn its keep. Once it is empty and cleaned, use it for pens, makeup brushes or the wee bits that never seem to have a home.

Follow the candle's safety label for when to stop burning, then let the jar cool completely. Remove the remaining wax and wick holder before cleaning it gently with warm, soapy water. Keep wax out of the sink and avoid boiling water or sudden temperature changes.

Recycle with a little local knowledge

If you are ready to part with the jar, check with your council or recycling centre that they accept candle glass. Candle jars can be treated differently from food and drink jars, so please check before putting one in a glass recycling bin or bottle bank.

Remove wax residue and the wick holder, and check the disposal instructions for the lid separately. Your local service can tell you the right route for each component.

Find recycling guidance in your area.

Quality, with care for what comes next

A proper candle should smell lovely, burn well and arrive in one piece. We look for packaging that protects that experience while helping us avoid unnecessary waste. Getting the balance right is part of making a product we are proud to put our name on.

As Dead On grows, we will keep reviewing the materials we use and looking for practical improvements. Small, considered choices are part of how we want to build this business.
